Van den vos Reynaerde by Unknown6/10/2023 ![]() He’s a liar and a cheat and an absolute scourge, but reading about him and his antics is fascinating. ![]() I’m not sure, but surely Reynard would be. I chose to verify this fact independently because, although it was presented to me in a footnote-the socially agreed-upon signal that it comes from the author and not the narrator, who may be unreliable-it is exactly the type of thing Reynard the fox would fabricate. A story that isn't the bible one of which you've probably never heard, let alone read: The Reynard literary material was so popular in medieval France that the French word for “fox” changed from “goupil” to “reynard” (the word still used in French for “fox”). A story that was once so popular that it integrated itself into the very essence of language. ![]() ![]() Imagine you have the chance to read a story that was such a cultural touchstone nearly everyone who could read had read it. ![]()

The heart between us by lindsay harrel6/10/2023 ![]() As for the characters, I don’t intentionally base them on real people, but I often realize they share certain characteristics with someone I know after I finish writing the book.įor example, I relate a lot to the way Crystal-Megan’s twin sister-bases her identity on achievement, as well as how growing up with an ill family member affected her sense of that identity. ![]() The first spark of an idea for The Heart Between Us came from a radio story I heard about someone going sky diving because it was on her heart donor’s bucket list. What inspired you to write The Heart Between Us? And are the characters completely made up, or are they based on real people? ![]() In this interview, Lindsay tells FamilyFiction the most challenging part of writing the novel, the real-life incident that inspired the story, and how the novel can inspire readers to live a life of bravery… After a lifetime of illness, Megan must learn to embrace the heart she’s been given so that she can finally share it with the people she loves most. Lindsay Harrel’s novel The Heart Between Us (Thomas Nelson) is the story of two sisters, one heart transplant, and a bucket List. ![]()

Jane austen at home by lucy worsley6/10/2023 ![]() It wasnt all country houses and ballrooms. ![]() This new telling of the story of Janes life shows us how and why she lived as she did, examining the places and spaces that mattered to her. In doing so, she manages to reveal some strikingly feminist elements in Austen’s everyday practices – feminist in the sense that Austen just did not care about what society expected from her. On the 200th anniversary of Jane Austens death, historian Lucy Worsley leads us into the rooms from which our best-loved novelist quietly changed the world. ![]() Worsley puts various aspects of Austen’s life and legacy in the context of their time and translates them into modern terms. If Austen’s heroines end up marrying this is just the prize to pay for a home.Īusten, however, and her sister Cassandra, chose another path in embracing life as a single woman in solidarity and friendship with female friends and family members. But contrary to the idea that women were confined to and restricted within their homes, Worsley points out that home, to Austen and her heroines, means independence, freedom, and self-expression. Worsley takes a rather modern perspective on Jane Austen’s life and heroines: the desire to have a home. Thxs Julia Maria Zimmermann! The tombs of atuan6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Le Guin this time serves us a journey out from darkness, but it is not so much a lesson for us readers, as the description of secularization growing. In A Wizard Of Eartsea the most important lesson was that one should acknowledge your negative sides, and accept death and darkness within. The protagonist this time around is Tenar, a child believed to be the incarnation of the high priestess to ancient, dark gods – serving temples, tombs and a subterranean labyrinth on Atuan, an desert island.Īgain this is a bildungsroman. Much to my surprise, Sparrowhawk, the Wizard of Earthsea himself, only appears halfway in this book. These books were originally intended as children’s literature, but easily defy and bridge whatever YA vs. Just as the first installment, it is a short book: only 130 pages. The Tombs Of Atuan is the second of the Earthsea series, but should you be weary of starting yet another long fantasy streak, don’t worry: this book is its own, with a storyline that wraps up neatly. Absolutely mandatory for any serious fantasy reader, a small, delightful gem in the midst of heaps and heaps of cheap trash. A Wizard Of Earthsea is one of my favorite books regardless of genre. ![]()

Elephants do remember6/9/2023 ![]() The elephants then buried the body in a shallow grave they had dug out.Įlephants can recognise themselves when looking in a mirror, showing a high level of cognition and self-awareness.
